Michael Hughes
President-Safeco Insurance
Michael Hughes is executive vice president, Liberty Mutual Agency Markets and president of Safeco Insurance, a member of the Liberty Mutual Group.
Hughes has been with Safeco since April 2002. His most recent role with the company was executive vice president of Insurance Operations with responsibility over all personal and commercial product management and underwriting. During his tenure, Safeco’s combined ratio – a leading indicator of financial performance for insurance companies – was among the industry’s best.
Prior to that role, Hughes was senior vice president of Safeco Business Insurance. Under his leadership, the company significantly expanded its business product lines and implemented one of the most sophisticated automated underwriting platforms created for the small-business insurance market.
Hughes came to Safeco from The Hartford Financial Services where he served as executive vice president of its $1.4 billion affinity personal lines operation. At The Hartford, he amassed more than 25 years of insurance experience managing personal, small-business and large-commercial underwriting operations.
A graduate of St. John's University's School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science in New York, Hughes also completed advanced executive education programs at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business and Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.
Hughes is also active in the community and serves on the board of the United Way of King County.
